When it comes to dealing with Trump, it might be more appropriate to use nursery school for the comparison as Trump operates at the emotional level of a toddler who hasn't yet learned the meaning of the words "we" and "our" and is only focused on "I, Me, and Mine".
DUMP AND IMPEACH TRAITOR , NAZIS , FELONS, AND CON REPUBLICONS EVERYWHERE. YES CON REPUBLICONS, CLIMATE CHANGE IS DANGEROUS, REAL, DISRUPTIVE WORLDWIDE, COSTLY, AND PREVENTABLE. STOP DENYING CLIMATE CHANGE AND FACE THE SCIENCE . DUMP THE CON RTRUMP AND CRONIES.
A descriptive article Lucas. We are in a very bad spot. All unnecessary, but self inflicted. The people of our country have made a grievous error in putting this administration in power. They will go down in history as the worse ever. Worse than the Hoover administration. These people do not know what they are doing. Every single one of them is there only for self enrichment. Add the fruitcakes and hanger ons, it is a recipe for disaster. If they ceased their stupid mistakes today, it will still take years to get back to where we were in 2024. The Chinese have been planning for this scenario. They are ready & willing. I hope what is coming won’t lead to a Depression. But, I believe it is coming!
I have been worried about this since before the election, and was physically ill when I woke to the horrible reality that the ignorant criminal had won. How to get Lucas' scenario out to more people is the dilemma, and it is imperative that we do if we are to survive at all.
You are spot on. I just finished reading an article from NPRs Josh Funk. “Buffett says US shouldn’t use ‘trade as a weapon” as Trump has done with tariffs. Definitely worth the read. Thank you Lucas for your insight!

My experience is that our reasonable people’s humiliation is in the actions that this administration has taken and in the lack of character that they exhibit. And it’s now not later. I personally cheer for countries like Canada, Greenland and others who stand up against our bully. They will be the ones to expose the fraud and drive our voters give them all a lesson in the voting booth yard. That is if we can keep our elections free and fair. If not then it will have to be the schoolyard
A side note, we just helped Canada and Australia not elect conservatives. Both were heading to elect conservative governments and then stayed center left. I suspect Trump showed them what the effect of a conservative really is.
There are many areas in which China and its allies, Russia and Iran, could hit the US financially and militarily. China not only owns a major portion of US treasury bonds but also large US real estate holdings. It may not be in its interest at this point to take Taiwan but combined with dumping US bonds and real estate the US would be financially and militarily overwhelmed at the same time. The Trump administration in its seeking power for him personally has been dismantling almost every part of the government that could protect us (cyber security, domestic and foreign intelligence, foreign diplomacy, military leadership, allies) and replaced it with incompetent, uninformed and inexperienced toadies. If our allies don't shift to alliances with China and Russia, they may be willing to sit by and watch the US fail.
The Chinese government although needing to keep its population quiescent has had a steady domestic barrage of pro nationalist, militaristic sentiments which may well overcome the population's economic pains. The Chinese government survived the economic disasters of Mao and seems likely to be willing to overcome the costs of a total challenge of the US - a US which is alienating all of its allies, economic, military and political. At this point, given Trump's attacks on almost every aspect of American life and culture, it's not clear how supportive or even sympathetic the US population would be to his ensuing travails confronting China.
How should we respond to powerful bullies? There’s a script for this, that we all learned in elementary school. Bullies gang up, and try to look and act tough. If they can, they pick their victims out, one by one, and beat them up to scare everyone else. But underneath it all, they are cowards, so if we stand together and be strong, we can defeat them.
As Benjamin Franklin said in 1776 at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
But what if we’re standing together and being strong, and nothing changes? (I recently read something dismissive about the amazing “Hands Off!” marches many of us walked in.) These rallies are important and impactful, even if it doesn’t seem like it at first. When we all show up, we signal to leaders of some universities, some law firms, some corporations, and some other places we can’t even guess, that we have their backs when they join us to stand up to the bullies.
Adapting what Ernest Hemingway once wrote about bankruptcy, the collapse of the bullies’ efforts will happen, “Slowly at first, then all at once.”
Take heart. All the protests are having an impact. You knew that right away when Thom Tillis announced his opposition to Ed Martin. Don Bacon just came out for hegseth to be fired. Brian kemp and Marjorie Taylor green both have passed in running against him ossoff. Little things ... But start putting them together ....
Good job, Lucas, a fine synthesis of the tariff dilemma. However, Trump has a point about the critical nature of manufacturing, that neither party was previously willing to address. His claim that other countries "killed our manfufacturing sector" is just a excuse because we actually gave mfg away for complex reasons and for a mess of pottage. However the question remains, what are alternative approaches to restore this former pillar of the economy. Our politics regardiing economics are so short-range and change with administrations that there seems no possibility of a rational, systematic approach to restore manufacturing - which incidentally also requires environmental law reform. Trump may now squash enforcement of NEPA, Clean Air Act, etc, but environment won't go away - and manufacturers are not going to invest in a temporary system that suppresses the regulatory system by stopping enforcement, because there is uncertainty after 2028. The 50 year old system has to be reformed with balance - like that policies successfully guiding the EU.
Nasser continued to work for George Bush, Sr., and they did take him out by assassination. Gave him a few more years to enjoy his family and stabilize Egypt. Bullying is an epidemic. The abuse and misuse of power is a constant. In 1960, I did beat the schoolyard bully, who was a foot taller than me, although I had long arms. I ignored the blows and kept smacking her nose until the blood exploded. In year 2000, she found me and thanked me for changing her life, much for the better.
I’ve always suspected that alongside cowardice there was often simply a reluctance to exert the effort while hoping someone else would step up and take care of the bully and make them go away.
More important than being a world leader is being willing to stand up for what is right. Bullies don’t understand this. Winning or losing a fight means far less than being on the side that strives for all instead of themselves.
As a retired teacher, I love this analogy with A Christmas Story. I could write a book of comparisons between elementary school kids and this regime.

As always, insightful, accessible and on the money. Please stay public - the country needs you.
Hope Mom and baby are doing well and that we have a country for this little guy to be proud of.

A large percentage of our "citizens" are traitors. They should lose the right to vote.

Let's hope we can continue to count on the existence of NPR.

I hope you'll stay vocal and prominent in politics , as we'll need all the great ones we can get, Lucas. It's good to hear from you.
Russia has also been in on the plan. As America is in turmoil so opens the door to harm us.

We know how to make this happen.

In my latest edition of news to know, I included a reference to an article that talks about the tax provisions that encourage offshoring.

You do a terrific job of explaining complex concepts in a way that a layperson will understand easily. Awesome talent!
