In so many ways, sir, it is a pleasure to have been one of your many supporters in the last election. This submission reinforces the obvious great choice you gave to Missourians everywhere, and it is my hope that you will continue to run for office in the next campaign. Pick a key office, get started and I'll bet that many of your past supporters will gladly join in, And, by the way, refusing to accept any dark money support is a hard choice, but a truly telling, important choice. Glad to read your work.

Yes!! I was a big & consistent financial supporter of Lucas’s campaign & I certainly will be again for any office he chooses to run for. I absolutely applaud his decision not to accept any dark money. Yes, that’s difficult, but it makes you so much more trustworthy as a representative of the people when you aren’t beholden to corporate big wigs.

This is a wonderful story of resistance from the people in Howardsville. My husband and I drive past Hayti on our way to visit my Dad in Memphis. and we just recently learned of the rich heritage of African Americans living in the bootheel. Thanks for sharing their stories. Very appropriate on this MLK day of service and remembrance.

Lucas, I'm so relieved that you understand, in these days when it seems like so many don't. I'll be your supporter for however long you keep fighting for fairness and justice and common sense.

Thanks SO much for this inspiring post, Colonel! I was just telling a student earlier today about the handicap he and I both know he has to overcome in getting a job and getting ahead, namely racism (he is of Senegalese origin), and we discussed ways for him to prevail.

Thank you for sharing this!

It is sad to think how little the needle has moved in treating all humans as equal.

We need to do so much better!

I am sure no Republican ever set foot in Howardsville or Hayti Heights. Thank you for helping them fight the good fight. We all need to do more.

Thank you!!! And YES, let's make TODAY (and every day) a day to celebrate all people who are activist heroes every day. And let's take time today (and every day) to seek out how we can support and forward what we know to be right and just. WE CAN DO THIS.

I grew up in a racist family also, but as you I listened, learned and changed. Some did not.

I think Lucas will win the next time he runs. I am positive that every encounter he has with people over the next year or two will bring him more voters. His decency shines during a very dark time.

Lucas, what an elegant and transcendent way to make racism and its effects felt by those of us who have never experienced it. Thank you for your beautiful writing and decency as a human being. I will share your essay on Bluesky.

Yes! That's the good old Missouri Bootheel for you. As redneck as rural Missouri is, the Bootheel is more culturally related to NE Mississippi --- unabashedly racist.
