Thank you a million times over for sharing this part of your story. It’s an example of what’s we as a people are missing today; love, compassion, understanding and being kind are all outstanding qualities for humans to interact with each other. We need more Mr. H’s, more people who are willing to reach out with a hand to lift people us rather than push them aside. Thank you to Mr. H and also his daughter, Jennifer.

How sorry we all are you didn’t win Missouri’s Senate seat. It is a loss for our state and our country. Our cowardly U.S. Senate votes for Trump’s Cabinet positions terrified that Elon Musk’s primary dollars will benefit an opponent. I only wish you had shared your tremendous educational achievements during your campaign. You are a winner, and we as a state are the loser.

Lucas,

You used this story before during your campaign. Maybe it's worth retelling, but I think most of us over 65 have these stories of childhood hardships. I think of those times being my character's foundation. When times are tough I always say "Well, I've had worse!" I especially used it during 23 years in the Army.

I was a struggling single mom, didn’t qualify for anything as I actually had a job ( if I had quit my job, I’d have been eligible), but selling everything I could, working extra when possible. I always told my kids, we are building character! You guys are going to have SOOO much character. And they do! Thanks for sharing this. Well written Lucas!!

What a beautiful story. I can totally identify with your childhood situation. I never had your wonderful experience of validation as a child, but distinctly remember my first day away at college. I realized that noone there knew anything about me or my large, very poor family. I could be whatever and however I wanted to be, and I did, from that day forward!

This was such a lovely story to read as I started my day. As a food-stamp and free-lunch kid growing up in Maine, I would often feel worried or embarrassed by our unfinished home. Our floors were all unfinished plywood and our unfinished basement featured a planked catwalk to get from the basement steps to the platform where our washing machine sat so we didn't have to literally walk in mud to do laundry. But like you, the kind and giving parents of friends made a big difference in my life. I don't want to know who I may have become if not for them. Thanks for sharing this story, Lucas. It was a lovely nudge to remember those who similarly helped me.

I'm glad Mr. H was the kind of man who looked deeply into your situation and knew you needed validation. More importantly that he freely gave it to you. Every child needs to be lifted up, and we need to take every opportunity to do so. Thank you for the profound reminder!

A great story about a great man and how he showed an adolescent how to be a real man.

Random acts of kindness happen every day in this country. It is so sad that Trump and Musk haven't a clue what that is. Thanks for the story. I will think about it today to get me through the madness.

Such a wonderful man Mr H was. You were lucky to know him. And I feel lucky to know more about the man I had hoped would win the Missouri Senate seat. I am still hoping for your leadership in US government asap. Although I live in Mississippi and can’t vote for you in state elections, I will continue to send donations to your campaigns.

What a beautiful story, Lucas. Just as your friends Dad demonstrated, lack of money or the finer things in life, are no measure of a persons character. My gut feeling is that you are a man with integrity. I always vote for the person/candidate that I believe is guided by integrity in all things.

I hope that someday you will be one of our state/national leaders!
